Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Of the Danish artists, Ejler Bille actually began as a sculptor, later devoting his efforts entirely to painting. Henry Heerup, Sonja Ferlov, Erik Thommesen and the wartime member of this group, Robert Jacobsen, are in fact principally known for their three-dimensional art. Moreover, much of the oeuvre of the main inspirational force behind this movement, philosopher-artist Asger Jorn, can be properly labelled as sculpture. Carl-Henning Pedersen was also to focus for a short period on this medium, although it was not i that attracted him for long. From Belgium, it was not only sculptor Reinhoud, but also the photographer-fil: maker-painter-ceramist Serge Vandercam who contributed in a major way to the three-dimensional version the burgeoning Cobra idiom. And not to be forgotten in this context is the ceramic work of Pierre Alechinsl In the Cobra years, art in Belgium was still largely dominated by Surrealist ideas and the three-dimensional work created in this period comprised mainly Surrealist objects. It was only photographer-painter-sculptor Raoul Ubac who approached the Cobra idiom in his slate reliefs. In the Netherlands, it was primarily Karel Appel who was to remain intensively involved throughout his artistic career in the creation of sculptures or assemblages. Two oeuvre catalogues have already been published on this aspect of his work alone!1 Tajiri wa and remains a sculptor. Although he has not been averse to other disciplines, it was as a sculptor that he contributed to Cobra. Of the other Dutch artists, Eugene Brands and Constant created many works that are considered sculpture, while Corneille also contributed, although on a more modest scale. Towards the end o his life, Lucebert focused for a short but intense period on ceramics. One artist whose sculpture unambiguously articulated the Cobra idiom was the sculptress and artist Lotti van der Gaag, who associated with the Cobra group in Paris. Other Cobra artists were also occasionally to produce work on a three-dimensional plane, particularly in the form of assemblages and ceramics. -
