Im Jahr der Erstausgabe erschienene Tauchnitz-Ausgabe der Geschichte um ein armes Bostoner Waisenmädchen, dem die Freundschaft mit und später Liebe zu einem Laternenanzünder das Glück bringen. Die Erzählung erreichte in wenigen Wochen eine hohe Auflage und wurde noch im selben Jahr ins Deutsche übersetzt.
