Full Title: PHYSICO-THEOLOGY: OR A DEMONSTRATION OF THE BEING AND ATTRIBUTES OF GOD, FROM HIS WORKS OF CREATION. Being the Substance of Sixteen Sermons Preached in St. Mary le Bow Church, London, At the Honourable Mr. Boyle's Lectures, in the Years 1711, and 1712. With Large Notes, and many curious Observations. Thirteenth Edition. pp. xv, xvi, 444, (10) (2)[Publisher's Advertisements] + Folding plate. 8vo. Contemporary leather boards, with later cloth back. XLib. ** BOONE FAMILY COPY: With the manuscript ownership and interesting annotations of: "James Boone, junior, His Book, Bought Nov. 4th A.D. 1772: Price 10/6" (we suspect that this is James Boone, Jr. [1743-1795] of Exeter Township, Berks County, PA). Other names that appear which may better identify the original owner are: Joshua Boone; Isaac Boone; and James Boone (1811/1825). William Derham (1657-1735), was a clergyman in the Anglican Church, with an intense interest in science (Natural Philosophy, Meteorology, Natural History, Astronomy, Entomology, Physics, and horology). He was appointed Chaplain to Lady Grey in 1679; Vicar of Wargrave in Berkshire, 1681-9; and physician and Vicar of Upminster in Essex, 1689-1735. He was also Chaplain to the Prince of Wales, and continued when the Prince became George II. Derham's first publication was The Artificial Clockmaker, 1696. Derham's best known works were Physico-Theology (the Boyle Lectures), 1713, and Astro-Theology, 1714. He also published very extensive meteorological records in the Philosophical Transactions, as well as on natural history (including a much noticed paper on the sexes of wasps as well as other papers on insects) and on astronomy. He was important in publishing the works of John Ray, and he edited Robert Hooke's Posthumous Works, 1705, and his Philosophical Experiments, 1726. Derham's measurement of the velocity of sound was the best that had been achieved; Newton accepted and used it in the Principia. In this famous work of physico-theology he uses the whole of the scientific, physical, and natural world to illustrate divinity evidenced. It is generally understood as a work of science rather than theology. The Boone family association makes this important work all the more interesting. W151 ** Hardcover
