(Klatzkin, Jacob) Böhm, Adolf: DIE ZIONISTISCHE BEWEGUNG, EINE KURZE DARSTELLUNG IHRER ENTWICKLUNG VON ADOLF BÖHM. 2 VOLUMES IN 1, Berlin Welt-Verlag 1920

Cloth Paper brown, binding cracked but solid. ; 8vo; 190, 363 pages; Includes 11-page index. I. Teil: Die Bewegung bis zum Tode Theodor Herzls. II. Teil: Die Bewegung vom Tode Herzls bis zum Ausbruch des Weltkrieges. Mit einem Anhang: Kurze Übersicht der Entwickelung vom Ausbruch des Weltkrieges bis zur gegenwart. Jacob Klatzkin's copy with his bookplate. Klatzkin was an important Zionist philospher who edited a number of early 20th Century German and Hebrew Zionist and other Jewish periodicals. With nahum Goldman he initiated in 1924 the ENCYCLOPAEDIA JUDAICA (cut short by the rise of Hitler) as well as a parallel encyclopedia in Hebrew. The author of numerous books, he believed that "the impulse of self-preservation among Jews in modern times created a revoltuionary situation, in which the Jewish people turned away from over-intellectualization and spiritualization to the resumption of national life in its own country, with its own language. A country and a language, according to Klatzkin, determine the life of a nation, not abstract religious or cultural ideas. " (Moshe Zeev Sole & Samuel Scheps in EJ 1972, 10: 1088-1090)
