Knibb, Michael A.: Translating the Bible. The Ethiopic Version of the Old Testament. Schweich Lectures. Oxford: University Press, 1995. ISBN: 9780197261941
Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - These Schweich Lectures tackle the origin, history, and character of the Ethiopie translation of the Old Testament. This version is of fundamental importance both in terms of the influence it has exerted on Ethiopian life and culture, and as one of the 'daughter versions' of the Greek Old Testament - yet much remains unknown or uncertain about it. Professor Knibb argues that, notwithstanding the criticisms that have been made of it, the traditional view of the history of the Ethiopie version - translation from the Septuagint in the fifth-sixth century, revision on the basis of the Syriac-based Arabic texts in the fourteenth century, and a further revision in the fifteenth or sixteenth century on the basis of the Hebrew - is broadly correct, but that this view is in need of development and refinement in many details. The majority of the book is devoted to a study of the mode of translation, to 'translation technique'. There is a discussion of general aspects of the translation and syntactical issues, and the question of consistency and diversity in the translation-equivalents that are used is also addressed. Many of these issues are of general relevance to other ancient Bible translations. ISBN 9780197261941 - , ISBN: 0197261949

EDITED BY TERESA J. HORNSBY, DRURY UNIVERSITY AND KEN STONE, CHICAGO THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY.. Bible Trouble. BRILL. 2012.. BRILL, 2012. ; fester Einband / hard cover ISBN: 9789004202573
Hardback, xiv, 355 pp., This listing is a new book, a title currently in-print which we order directly and immediately from the publisher.. Hardback - The essays in Bible Trouble all engage queer theories for purposes of biblical interpretation, a rare effort to date within biblical scholarship. The title phrase "Bible Trouble" plays on Judith Butler's Gender Trouble, gesturing toward a primary text for contemporary queer theory. The essays consider, among others, the Lazarus story, the Ethiopian eunuch, "gender trouble" in Judges 4 and 5, the Song of Songs, and an unorthodox coupling of the books of Samuel and the film Paris Is Burning. This volume "troubles" not only the boundaries between biblical scholarship and queer theory but also the boundaries between different frameworks currently used in the analysis of biblical literature, including sexuality, gender, race, class, history, and literature. The contributors are Ellen T. Armour, Michael Joseph Brown, Sean D. Burke, Heidi Epstein, Deryn Guest, Jione Havea, Teresa J. Hornsby, Lynn R. Huber, S. Tamar Kamionkowski, Joseph A. Marchal, Jeremy Punt, Erin Runions, Ken Stone, Gillian Townsley, Jay Twomey, and Manuel Villalobos. - Queer Reading at the Boundaries of Biblical Scholarship - 67.
