"The magnificent, classical heroism and the mysteriously religious profundity of ancient Greece, Rome, Israel, Egypt, and Babylon have captivated film audiences from the earliest years of filmdom to the present day. Whether it be the birth of Jesus, the parting of the Red Sea, or the chariot race of Ben-Hur, the intense religion, miraculous spectacle, and exciting adventure of the ancient world have earned their laurels as some of the cinema's most filmable subjects. Beginning with the silent Italian spectaculars The Last Days of Pompeii and Quo Vadis?, Jon Solomon investigates some of the most significant and controversial films of all time-Ben-Hur, Cleopatra, The Ten Commandments, Intolerance, King of Kings, Fellini Satyricon, The Robe, Cocteau's Orphee, The Fall of the Roman Empire, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Hercules, and many, many others. Are the plot, characters, costumes, atmospheres, and sets in these films authentic? Was Fox's62,000,000 Cleopatra really a failure? How should Jesus or Moses appear on the screen? Did Charlton Heston really injure him self while filming the chariot race for Ben-Hur? Why did Italy produce almost 200 "gladiator" films in the early six ties? What are the major attractions of the ancient world? These are just a handful of the questions Mr. Solomon investigates. After a chronological survey of all the 400-plus films in the genre, the author then discusses separately the films about Greek and Roman history; Greek and Roman mythology; the Old Testament; the New Testament; Egypt, Babylon, and the ancient Orient; ancient Greek tragedy; comedies about antiquity; and the amusing Italian "muscle- man epics." This book offers a Herculean portion of illustrations-200 photographs that provide striking comparisons between these films and the remnants of the ancient world. They reveal that such films as Jason and the Argonauts, Solomon and Sheba, The Greatest Story Ever Told, Spartacus, and Samson and Delilah take their makeup, costumes, sets, and plots directly from archaeological remains and ancient literary evidence. Above all, they prove that studious historical and archaeological research lie behind every successful film about antiquity. The Ancient World in the Cinema is more than a pleasantly informative book about "ancient movies"; it is a fascinating search for a noble, dazzling, exotic, exciting, and challenging bygone age of mankind".
