Sir James George Frazer (1854-1941) schottischer Anthropologe u. Religionswissenschaftler, der durch seine Forschungen wesentlich zur Anerkennung der Ethnologie als Wissenschaft beitrug. Wesentlich ist seine Schlussfolgerung, dass die Evolution des menschlichen Geistes auf der Reihenfolge Magie-Religion-Wissenschaft beruhe. Entgegen dieser evolutionistische Auffassung werden heute noch seine detaillierten Studien zur Mythologie als Quellen geschätzt. H.P. Lovecraft nennt in einigen Erzählungen das Frazer's vorliegendes Hauptwerk, dtsch.
