Wear. Inch chipped at bottom of spine. Flap of 1/2 inch remaining. Fading on spine label. Can barely make out "Goldsmith's Animated Nature". 3/4 inch chip and tear in folding of right bottom corner. 3/4 inch terars at bottom of frontispiece and "It may be proper to inform the reader," page before title page. Is that an insert? First signature loosening. Frontispiece stained but present of varities of mankind. Stained and foxed. ix+472pp. It seems to be complete but would be missing the back endpaper. There are only two plates present the frontispiece and opposite p. 437. It is may be that there are plates missing. Earlier editions list 55 plates in the four volume set. , corners rubbed, head and tail of spine slightly rubbed, hinges cracked but strong and unbroken, cloth to covers a little faded and spotted, a few finger marks to title page and a few other page and plates, otherwise a nice tight copy in good+ condition , half burgundy calf with gilt title to spine, five raised bands with gilt ornaments, decorative tolling to margins of leather on covers, mauve cloth sides, all edges marbled

pp; liv, 536: IV, 541. Bound in light brown leather over brown boards, black title piece lettered in silver. Frontispiece portrait of Goldsmith. All plates called for. There are seventeen plates in volume 1, in addition to the frontispiece portrait and the title page. In volume 2 there are twenty-seven plates as well as the frontispiece and title page. Includes a biographical sketch of the author by Washington Irving. Volume 1 encompases A History of the Earth and Animated Nature in two parts, along with hand coloured plates. Volume 2 consists of parts three to six of the History and all colour plates as called for. The second volume concludes with a list of plates, directions to the binder, and index. Both volumes have heavy surface rubbing on the boards, foxing on the prelims, and soiling. There is a half-inch cigarette burn at the bottom of the first two plates after page 536, only minimally affecting the illustrations. Both volumes have been re-backed and the hinges have been internally strengthened. Previous owner's bookplate on the front paste down of both volumes. In all, a very good two volume set with excellent illustrated plates. First Edition No Jacket Hard Cover 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
