Goff, Kenneth (Oliver Kenneth Goff, 1909-1972). TRAITORS IN THE PULPIT AND TREASON TOWARD GOD. [Englewood, CO]: [Kenneth Goff], 1946
12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall First edition. 12mo (5 3/8" x 7 3/4"). 61 pages. Green pictorial wrappers, side-stapled (paperbound). Cover art by Art Barr. Illustrated. CONDITION: Staples starting to rust, slight creasing to bottom edge of rear wrapper, else Good+. Book weighs 3 oz.
About the author: Kenneth Goff (1909-1972) was an interesting character, a self-admitted former member of the Communist Party, who became a self-styled fundamentalist evangelist, lecturer, and author of right-wing tracts. After turning his back on Communism and testifying against his former comrades in front of the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1939, Goff became interested in just about every "conspiracy" which popped up in the 1940's and 1950's: Communism (of course); fluoridation of the water supply (he claimed that the Communists were behind fluoridation, in order to make the American populace into docile and lethargic sheep, ripe for conquest); brainwashing (Goff claimed to have written a Communist manual of brainwashing techniques); UFOs (Goff wrote a pamphlet, "The Flying Saucers: From Russia, From Another Planet, Or From God," and lectured on the connection between flying saucers and Russia); the United Nations (the U.N. was, of course, a Communist front designed to take over the world); etc. In his later years, Goff's politics and writings became even more right-wing and skewed toward anti-Semitism and neo-Nazism. His hometown newspaper in Colorado called him "unstable and fanatic." His politics made him of concern to the FBI, who monitored his activities and kept a file on him.
About the book: In this early (1946) exercise in postwar Red hysteria, Goff targets Christian ministers as possible purveyors of Commie propaganda and urges his readers to examine their own churches and investigate their own preachers and report any suspicious activities to Goff! The objects of his diatribe in this book even include the venerable Methodist missionary and author Dr. E. Stanley Jones, renowned theologian and author Reinhold Niebuhr, and Baptist minister and author Harry Emerson Fosdick!!
Chapter titles: Chapter I. People's Institute Of Applied Religion; Chapter II. Methodist Federation For Social Action (!!!); Chapter III. Christian Front For Peace; Chapter IV. Friends Of Democracy; Chapter V. Bishop Oxnam; Chapter VI. Dr. E. Stanley Jones; Chapter VII. Kenneth Leslie; Chapter VIII. Kirby Page; Chapter IX. The Double Crossing Dean (on Rev. Hewlett Johnson, the Dean of Canterbury); Chapter X. The Four Quacks (on Harry Emerson Fosdick, Reinhold Niebuhr, Eliot White, Dr. Preston Bradley).
Quotations from the book: "In this book, we have hardly scratched the surface of the Red Trojan Plot to destroy the Churches of America. Many books could be written, thousands of names could be brought to light but it has been our hope and prayer, that this book would be an eye opener, which would alert you to the danger that lies ahead; and that you will make yourself a Committee of one, to examine your own Church to find out whether Communism is making inroads in it. If you find the slightest evidence of Red intrigue, write us giving full details and enclose any literature, which you believe we ougt to see."- From the author's preface (entitled "Act Now!").
"Atheism is a world-wide movement. The communists are the creators and supporters of it throughout the world. The greatest stronghold of atheism today is Russia; although its poisonous fangs spread into every section of the world."- From the author's introduction.
"A man in high authority in governmental service who is definitely in a position to know, recently told me that the American Communists are making a more concerted effort than ever to get their people into the various churches of America. The Communist Party has been urging its followers to join churches and to act in such a way that eventually they will become president of the congregation, youth leader, elder, deacon, or occupy some other place of influence. Some of these known radicals are given these important places by modernistic men of the cloth who know exactly what they are doing. Communism is the great deceiver in the world today. It contains the doctrines of satan, and, therefore, does not have to tell the truth nor fulfill its promises. Many clergymen are aiding the communists. If the Red Revolution ever succeeds in America, these same red-aiding preachers will find that the communists have no more use for them. They will be liquidated and imprisoned, and their churches destroyed, closed, or turned into atheistic muesums..."- From the first chapter..

SHAW, George Bernard. MISALLIANCE, THE DARK LADY OF THE SONNETS, AND FANNY'S FIRST PLAY. WITH A TREATISE ON PARENTS AND CHILDREN. London: Constable and Company Ltd., 1914.
Original green cloth. Laurence A128a. All three plays had previously appeared in German translation. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the half title page "To George Sylvester Viereck/from George Bernard Shaw./London./30th May 1914." Viereck was a very popular poet between 1907 and 1912, about the same time that he became increasingly involved in German-American social and political movements. Though his propaganda efforts for Germany during the first World War occasionally got him into hot water, he did not get into any serious trouble. His expulsion from the Poetry Society of America in 1919 resulted in a letter of protest from Shaw that was published in THE NEW REPUBLIC. Viereck interviewed Shaw several times in the succeeding years. He befriended not only Shaw but alsoEinstein and Freud, claiming to have been granted the first interview to explain psychoanalysis to the public. In the 1930s, however, Viereck becamean American propagandist for Nazi Germany and ultimately spent time in prison for his part in their cause..
