Exceedingly rare Indian-printed work; the English-language nucleus of what was to become the author's chef d'oeuvre (in German) a decade later. It was in the quest for materials for this work that Sprenger travelled extensively in Egypt, Syria, and Mesopotamia (cf. DNB). From the collection of the orientalist Wilhelm Ahlwardt (1828-1909) with his autogr. ownership to front wrapper. No copy in the Austrian National Library. - The Austrian-born orientalist Aloys Sprenger (1813-93) studied medicine and natural sciences as well as oriental languages at Vienna, receiving tutelage from Hammer-Purgstall but failing to be accepted into the Oriental Academy, open only to the nobility. In 1836 he moved to London, where he worked with the Graf von Münster on the latter's "History of Military Science among the Muslim Peoples", and thence in 1843 to Calcutta. In 1848 he was sent to Lucknow, to prepare a catalogue of the royal library there, the first volume of which appeared in 1854. In 1850 Sprenger was named examiner, official government interpreter, and secretary of the Asiatic Society of Calcutta. He published many works while holding this latter position, among them "Dictionary of the Technical terms used in the sciences of the Musulmans" (1854) and "Ibn Hajar's biographical dictionary of persons who knew Mohammed" (1856). Sprenger took a position as professor of oriental languages at the University of Bern in 1857, moving in 1881 to Heidelberg. His voluminous collection of Arabic, Persian, Hindustani and other manuscripts and printed material was eventually acquired by the Prussian State Library in Berlin. Several of his editions remain the standard Received Text. Although never having taught or worked in Austria, Sprenger is considered a typical example of the Austrian school of oriental studies, traditionally aiming for a better understanding of the Middle-Eastern peoples (cf. ÖBL XIII, 49). "Sprenger was not only an ardent and successful book-collector [...] He is said to have acquired a good practical knowledge of no less than twenty-five languages. While in the north of India he was an enthusiastic mountaineer, and, though he did not grapple with the difficult subject of old Arabic geography until he was over sixty, he dealt with it with an insight and acumen that seemed almost instinctive" (DNB). Lopez, Trini: By Popular Demand. More Trini Lopez at PJ's (Recorded Live) (LP 33 U/min.) Ariola Reprise 70854 IT, (1963).
Trini Lopez (auch Trini Lopez; * 15. Mai 1937 in Dallas, Texas, als Trinidad Lopez III) ist ein lateinamerikanischer Sänger. Bevor er im Jahr 1962 von Produzent Don Costa bei einem Auftritt im PJ Club in Hollywood entdeckt wurde, spielte Trinidad Lopez III, so sein Geburtsname, nur in kleineren Clubs bei Gelegenheitsauftritten. 1963 kam sein Debütalbum '"Trini Lopez Live at PJ's" heraus. Das Album enthielt seinen bekanntesten Song "If I Had A Hammer", der in 25 Ländern Platz 1 der Charts erreichte. "This Land Is Your Land" war ebenfalls ein sehr erfolgreicher Titel. Aufgrund der daraus resultierenden Popularität engagierte ihn die Gibson Guitar Corporation, um eine Gitarre zu designen. Trini Lopez sagte zu und entwickelte die Trini Lopez Standard, eine Rock 'n Roll-Gitarre, die auf der Gibson ES-335 basierte, und die Lopez Deluxe, eine Variation der Gibson-Jazzgitarre. Ab 1965 nahm er viele Coverversionen bekannter Lieder auf, unter anderem Lemon Tree (1965), I'm Coming Home Cindy (1966) und Sally Was a Good Old Girl (1968). In den 1960ern und 70ern versuchte er sich als Schauspieler, allerdings ohne großen Erfolg. Seine wohl bedeutendste Rolle hatte er in Robert Aldrichs Film Das dreckige Dutzend. Daher widmete er sich wieder der Musik und tourte durch Europa und Lateinamerika. Trini Lopez erhielt einige Auszeichnungen, darunter die Aufnahme in die Latin Music Hall of Fame im Jahr 2003.

Ca. 40 Bücher zur Mafia in den USA, primär 1960er und 1970er. Angeboten wird ein Konvolut von ca. 40 englischsprachigen Büchern zur Mafia in den USA. Die Titel stammen zumeist aus den 1960ern und 1970ern, etliche schwimmen ersichtlich auf der Mafia-Welle, die Mario Puzo mit seinem "Godfather" (deutsch "Der Pate") ausgelöst hatte. Spannend das interne Mafia-Material, also Bücher, in denen einstige Mitglieder der "Ehrenwerten Gesellschaft" aus dem Nähkästchen plaudern. Schön auch die Biographien mancher "Paten". Erwöhnenswert noch der Titel über Hollywood und die Mafia. Brisant sind seit den jüngsten CIA-Enthüllungen natürlich besonders die Bücher zu Sam Giancana ("Gold-Sam"). Dieser wurde doch tatsächlich vom CIA beauftragt, Fidel Castro zu ermorden - was den Grundtenor der meisten hier angebotenen Titel erheblich in Frage stellt. Wusste die US-Regierung wesentlich mehr vom Tun der Mafia-Kriminellen, als man zugeben wollte und konnte?? Das Konvolut besteht großteils aus Taschenbüchern, gebundene Titel sind jedoch auch vorhanden. Der Sammler erwarb die Bücher überwiegend in Antiquariaten, d.h. die Titel sind gebraucht und mit den üblichen Benutzungsspuren, teils schwächer, teils stärker. Siehe Bild!
