The best English book on the art and practice of falconry, a very attractive publication. Extremely rare first edition and completes original binding! It is a complete treatise of the art of falconry, with descriptions and illustrations of the various species of birds used in England in that sport, both hawks and falcons. The lithographic stones for the first edition were destroyed after the publication, so the plates for the second edition had to be redrawn. The work is an authority on Falconry. Very rare. Original cloth binding with gilded picture of falcon on front. Collation VI,(1),147 pp. and 24 lithographed and hand-coloured plates showing 21 falcons and 5 hawks and plate 22-24 showing the equipment used for falconry. Size: 29 by 19,5cm. Large exlibris from Leonard Colin Somervell. Some staining and foxing (as always with this book). Some pages loose and others reattached. The silver lettering is rubbed, but readily legible. The color is worn from the tips of the fore corners and the top/bottom of the spine, but nowhere is the cloth worn through to the boards. Otherwise very minor wear and soil on the sound binding. Name on ffep & half-title, light foxing of endpapers. Five lines of type are highlighted neatly in yellow, else contents are clean and unmarked. No DJ. ; Red cloth, silver lettering. Photo endpapers. Scores of b/w photos. DOGS.
