Vidal, Gore. 1876: A NOVEL. New York City, NY: Random House, 1976.
Hardcover. First Edition. First Printing. 364 pages. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. The author's fourteenth novel and the third volume in his cycle of novels on American history. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. The other novels include, in chronological order: "Burr", "Lincoln", "Empire", "Washington, DC", "Hollywood", and "The Golden Age". Gore Vidal's grand vision of the entire project has taken up the better part of forty years. Vidal's unblinking and penetrating vision throughout the entire cycle is the transformation of his beloved country from a struggling, proud, and independent Republic to a world power and uncontrollable Empire. Charles Schuyler, the narrator of "Burr", returns to the United States after a very long absence, with his widowed daughter, Emma. Their joint project is to find a very rich, prominent, and politically connected husband for Emma so that she can be secure and he can go back to France as an ambassador. This lovely Jamesian theme is further enriched by Vidal's own deeply personal concerns as a novelist: Schuyler is distracted and absorbed by the scandals swirling around Washington, notably the allegations of corruption and obstruction of justice against Ulysses S. Grant, and the close presidential race between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democratic Samuel Tilden. Tilden won the election, only to have it brazenly taken away from him through electoral fraud. Before one thinks this all sounds so recent and familiar, bear in mind that Vidal published the novel in 1976, one hundred years after the events described in his book and more than thirty years before our present time. Brilliant appearances by Chester A. Arthur, Mark Twain, Charles Nordhoff, and others are just as remarkably alive, seemingly happening before our eyes. "Vidal writes so well that you find yourself holding your breath over something that is a foregone conclusion. Vidal's genius makes the characters of Washington live in a way history books do not" (The Boston Globe) . One of the most ambitious projects in contemporary American literature. "Vidal's historical imagination is so powerful as to compel awe" (Harold Bloom) . A "must-have" title for Gore Vidal collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue fountain pen on the title page by Gore Vidal. It is signed directly on the page, not on a tipped-in page. This title has been out-of-print as a hardcover for a very long time. This is one of few signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition still available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. There are actually more copies of the Limited than of the regular trade online, making the latter the more collectible edition. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER GORE VIDAL TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0394497503.
