Das grundlegende Lehrbuch der Kosmographie im 16. Jahrhundert, zusammengebunden mit einem nicht ganz kompletten Exemplar der Ausgabe von 1540. Erstmals 1524 in Landshut als Cosmographicus liber gedruckt, wurde Apianus' Text ab 1529 von dem Astronomen und Begründer der niederländisch-belgischen Geographie, Rainer Gemma Frisius durchgesehen und mit eigenen Zusätzen ergänzt und vor allem in Antwerpen nachgedruckt. Wie seine Vorgänger Martin Waldseemüller und Matthias Ringmann behandelt der aus der Wiener Schule in der Tradition Georg von Peuerbachs und Regiomontanus' kommende Peter Apian nach einer Einführung, in der er auf die Unterschiede von Kosmographie und Geographie eingeht, in insgesamt 18 Kapiteln u.a. die navigationskundlichen Beobachtungen, Fragen der Sphären, Zonen, Parallelkreise, Klimate, Längen und Breiten, der Polhöhe, Winde und erläutert den Gebrauch der ptolemäischen Karten. Im zweiten Teil werden die vier damals bekannten Kontinente in knapper Form abgehandelt. Ein weiteres Kapitel bietet einen Ortsindex mit Längen- und Breiten- sowie mit Minuten- und Sekundenangaben. Von Gemma Frisius stammen die beiden erstmals 1533 mitgedruckten Nachträge: Libellus de locorum describendorum ratione (Wie man mittels einer einzigen Grundmessung ein Gebiet von beliebiger Grösse vermessen kann) sowie Usus annuli astromici (Über den Gebrauch der astronomischen Ringe). Die erstmals in der französischen Ausgabe von 1544 durch Gemma Frisius hinzugefügte herzförmige Charta Cosmographica basiert auf Apians Weltkarte von 1520. Sie liegt hier in der lateinisch-holländisch bedruckten Fassung vor (vgl. Shirley 82/96) und dokumentiert die Resultate der europäischen Entdeckungsreisen in der ersten Hälfte des 16. Jhs. Die Karte (185 x 270 mm) ist umgeben von Windbläsern, oben in der Mitte Zeus auf dem Adler reitend und Kaiser Karl V. mit Doppeladler auf dem Brustpanzer. Sie zeigt gegenüber der Apian-Karte von 1520 deutliche Verbesserungen der Umrisse Amerikas und vor allem Asiens. Während Nordamerika, nach den Dorsch-Fischgründen vor Neufundland, lateinisch bezeichnet als [Regio] "Baccalearum", noch als schmale, langgezogene Halbinsel dargestellt ist, werden die Konturen Mittel- und Südamerikas schon recht genau widergegeben. Der Cosmographicus Liber ist mit zahlreichen, auch ästhetisch überzeugenden, Darstellungen von Sphären, Parallelkreisen und Einrichtungen versehen, die durch die einzelne Teile drehbar sind, so dass der Kosmograph die Anleitungen praktisch nachvollziehen konnte. Die kleine Griechenlandkarte - einmal lateinisch und in der Ausgabe von 1550 mit französischer Schrift gedruckt - diente zur Veranschaulichung unterschiedlicher Landformen (Festland, Halbinsel und Insel). Die auf Bl. XXVIII, resp. 29 montierte Volvelle stellt eine kreisförmige Weltkarte in Polarprojektion dar. Mit der drehbaren Scheibe soll die Drehung der Erde um ihre Achse veranschaulicht werden. In der Mitte ist ein drehbarer Ring (Zodiakalskala) mit Zeiger angebracht. - In der Ausgabe von 1540 - die als Vorlage der französischen Übersetzung von 1545 diente - fehlt das Bl. XIII mit einer Volvelle (in der Ausgabe 1550 aber vorhanden). - Titel der Ausgabe von 1540 etwas fleckig und unfrisch, vereinzelte schwache Flecken, hs. Namen, datiert mit 1731, resp. 1767, auf Titel der Ausgabe von 1540. Im direkten Vergleich der hier zusammen gebundenen Ausgaben ist klar ersichtlich, dass für die Ausgabe von 1550 die meisten Holzschnitte neu nachgeschnitten wurden. - Vermerk von zeitgenössischer Hand auf Bl. 38v der Ausgabe von 1550. The authoritative and most notably theoretical cosmography of the 16th century, complete with the the folding truncated cordiform woodcut world map (Shirley 82), bound together with an earlier and slightly differing edition of the same work in one volume. First published as Cosmographicus liber at Landshut in 1524 Apian's thoroughly professional Cosmographia was corrected and reissued by Rainer Gemma Frisius first at Antwerp in 1529 and revised and enlarged in 1533. While Apian discusses in the first part the principles of cosmography, in the second he describes the use of maps and surveying techniques, defines weather and climate, and suggests lunar distances be used for calculating longitude. America is describet as fourth part of the world. The beautiful world map is based on Gemma Frisius' world map of 1540, which has now been lost. It appeared first in the 1544 edition and represents heaven and earth, worlds both real and imagined. It shows in its outline the influence of recent discoveries. The book illustrates and describes wooden, brass and ivory instruments. The working paper instruments included in the text, called volvelles, let readers experiment with the ideas described. With the volvelles that were supplied readers could solve calendar problems and find the positions of the sun, moon and the planets. In the armillary sphere (Sphaera mundi) the Earth appears in the middle as a terrestrial globe with land masses among the seas and its own equator marked off in degrees. The Arctic and Antarctic Poles are labelled, as is the Equator. The lavishly illustrated book was subsequently reprinted in Latin and translated into Spanish, French, and Dutch, it was kept continuously in print up to the 18th century. In the history of cartography Aspian occupies a respected place for having perfected the technique of depicting the curved surface of the globe on the flat surface of a map. - Leaf XIII of the 1540 edition is lacking, traces uf use and some staining, ms. names dated 1731, resp. 1767 on title of the 1540 edition.
