Contemporary full diced russia, a little rubbed and scuffed, especially on the rear cover. Light foxing passim., and some offsetting from some plates. Characteristic gilt label of Alexander Lawson Duncan, nephew and heir of James Duncan of Jordanstone, near Alyth, Perthshire. The latter was the founder of the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, and at Jordanstone, the family built up a fine library. The 'Hortus Gramineus,' a study of grasses, is an important work in the history of experimental botany and agriculture, reporting field studies instituted by John, Duke of Bedford, and carried by his gardener, the author, George Sinclair, FLS, FHS. 3rd ed. Mit vielen Abbildungen der Pflanzen und Samen erläutert, womit diese Versuche gemacht wurden, nebst praktischen Bemerkungen über ihre natürliche Eigenschaften, und die Erdarten, welche am besten für sie taugen; sammt Angaben über die besten Gräser für dauernde Weiden, bewässerte Wiesen, hochliegendes Weideland, und zur Wechselwirtschaft, begleitet mit den unterscheidenden Merkmalen der Arten und Abarten. Der Übersetzer Friedrich Schmidt übersetzte und ergänzte das Werk in siebzehnjähriger Arbeit.

Boards detached. Spine cloth very worn. 1" tear and moderate creasing to front free endpaper. Last leaf of advertisements detached and chipped. Pencil notes and marginalia. Lacking two plates. Some foxing. Moderate rubbing to edges of leaves. Plates fairly clean with attractive bright colours. A poor copy lacking two plates, but of some interest as the 19th century owner "Willis" has clearly found the book to be of use.; No date [c. 1850]. Stated "Fourth Edition". iv, 362 pages + 43 of 45 hand-coloured plates + 1 plate not called for + [2] pages advertisements + [1 (blank)] + 7-14 pages advertisements. Original blind-stamped cloth boards. Title continues: "Or, an Account of the Results of Experiments on the Produce and Nutritive Qualities of Different Grasses, &c. &c. Used as the Food of the More Valuable Domesit Animals, Instituted by John Duke of Bedford." Owner's signature [?] Willis 1852". Also includes loosely two-thirds of a single leaf manuscript letter addressed to Robert Bruce Willis dated 1865, on letterhead stationery from the Royal Berks Seed Establishment, Reading mentioning the best grasses for sheep. Also includes loosely an offprint from the Royal Agricultural Society, 16 pages, "Laying down Land to Permanent Pasture" (1861) by Martin Hope Sutton. Also includes loosely a stapled pamphlet "Weeds and Parasitic Plants: The Losses they Inflict on Agriculture. A paper read before a Meeting of Farmers at Tai Tapu [New Zealand], August 24th, 1891 by M. Murphy, 26 pages, signed by owner "Willis 1892". ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
