Book provides a history of Dismal Swamp which originally spread over approximately twenty-two hundred miles of dense forest land in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. In the sixties it had shrunk to approximately seven hundred and fifty sqare miles due to development of the area. It lies in the Norfolk and Nansemond counties of Virginia and the remainder is in Currituck, Camden, Gates, Perquimans, and Pasquotank counties of North Carolina.
