FOUR VOLUMES.8vo,(7.9 x 5.2 inches).Volume one.viii,68,406pp.--Volume two.vi,344pp.--Volume three.iv,358,5pp.--Volume four.vi,374,52pp index.Volume one contains a scarce early printing,in English,of Turgots' hugely influential reflections on riches,"the germe from which Mr.Adam Smith formed his excellent treatise on the Wealth of Nations"--from the introduction to the 68pp essay.Not translated into English until 1793,all early editions are uncommon.A very good clean set in attractive contemporary full tree calf bindings.Spines with twin red labels,gilt.Ruled compartments with decorative gilt tooling.Marbled endpapers.Original red silk page markers still intact in each volume.Small hole (0.3 x 0.1 inch) to the bottom of the spine on volume one.Some areas of loss to the surface leather on boards but with the remaining leather below the same colour this does not detract much from the overall attractiveness of the bindings.A very good set of these two most important works and all the more interesting to have the key inspiration alongside the finished work.:

The dust jacket is tired, its creases are now soft, with the shipping and rubbing at both the head and tail of the back strip, and at the fold over tips. Digital image available upon request. Perhaps best remembered for the book The Thirty-Nine Steps, the author was actually quite prolific, producing over 60 books in 53 years.
