These 41 essays are the work of an astonishingly diverse group of novelists , considering "what it means to be writing from specific race, class and ge nder positions at a particular historical moment." As such, the book is a s pirited illustration of multiculturalism at its best, encompassing Jews, ga y men, lesbians, Asian Americans, African Americans and a cornucopia of Lat in American, African and Caribbean writers. Most tell of the trajectory tha t brought them to writing and extrapolate political or social lessons from that experience. A few, like Michelle Wallace, offer programmatic responses to issues of representation and identity, and these are among the least sa tisfying entries. The best essays make clearest the connection among person al, aesthetic and political concerns: James Baldwin's kaleidoscopic and bit tersweet recollection of his father's death; Alicia Dujovne Ortiz's witty t racing of the nexus of food, music and ethnic identity in Argentina; Elena Poniatowska's denunciation of the oppression of women in Latin America, end ing wth a litany of latina writers who died prematurely, often by their own hand. Mariani edited Remaking History..
