Ochre linen boards w/orange lettering/VG w/trace wear to corners tips, light soiling & uniform discoloration/fading all over, particularly to spine. DJ/None. Map of Southern California and Nevada (by Milton Cavagarno) on endpapers. Introduction by Carl Van Doren. Mary Austin tells readers, "The country where you may have sight and touch of that which is written lies between the high Sierras south from Yosemite --- east and south over a very great assemblage of broken ranges beyond Death Valley, and on illimitably into the Majave Desert." She speaks of approaching the region by stage coach .. This 1950 republication of the orginal text of 1903 is accompanied by 48 black & white plates from Ansel Adams who says "..not writing to my knowledge conveys so much of the spirit of earth and sky, of plants and people, of storm and the desolation of majextic wastes, of tender, intimate beauty, as does The Land of Little Rain." Two great artists, one creating imagery with words, the other with photographs, are separated in time by almost half a century, present enduring visions of a grand topography in one volume. Strong copy.
