Rebecca Gratz (1781-1869) was the most famous member of a well known family of merchants in Philadelphia. "She is reputed to have been the model for Rebecca in Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe. She had a wide acquaintance, including many literary figures; her friend Washington Irving may have told Scott about her. Energetic in social welfare as in her friendships and her inveterate letter writing, she aided in founding the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society (1819) , the Hebrew Sunday School Society (1838) , and the Philadelphia Jewish Foster Home (1815) and worked with these organizations for many years.
