Anson, George (1697-1762) . - Walter, Richard. A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD. IN THE YEARS MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV. BY GEORGE ANSON ESQ; COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF A SQUADRON OF HIS MAJESTY'S SHIPS, SENT UPON AN EXPEDITION TO THE SOUTH-SEAS. With Charts of the Southern Part of South America, of Part of the Pacific Ocean, and of the Track of the Centurion round the World. - (3) Large Folding Maps - A complete and sound copy. "This is the official account of Anson's voyage. England, at war with Spain in 1739, equipped eight ships under the command of George Anson to harass the Spaniards on the western coast of South America, for the purpose of cutting off Spanish supplies of wealth from the Pacific area....Lord Anson, who was a friend and patron of Benjamin Robins, after returning from the voyage around the world in the Centurion, appears to have entrusted to Robins, for revision, the account of the voyage which had been compiled from the journals by his chaplain, Richard Walter. It is probable that Robins revised and edited the work, wrote an introduction, and added dissertations....This compilation has long occupied a distinguished position as a masterpiece of descriptive travel. ANSON, George; Richard Walter, compiler. A voyage round the world, in the years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV ... Compiled from papers and other materials of the Right Honourable George Lord Anson, and published under his direction by Richard Walter, M.A. Chaplain of His Majesty's Ship the Centurion, in that expedition. T. Osborne, London 1748.

Fifth edition, large paper copy on thick paper, 4to ( 29 x 24.5 cm approx), [20], 417, [3] pp., folding copper-plate frontispiece map of the world (not called for in list of illustrations), 42 copper-plates (mostly folding), contemporary sprinkled calf rebacked to style, spine richly gilt. Classic account of circumnavigation. - Borba de Moraes. Of the original eight ships, which started this expedition to harass the Spaniards on the western coast of South America, seven were lost around Cape Horn and on the coast of Chili, and out of 900 men who left England more than 600 died. The primary object of the expedition was not attained, but by the capture of the Manila Galleon near China, Anson and the surviving members of his crew reached England much the richer. Anson's voyage laid the groundwork for the British voyages of exploration in the Pacific of the latter half of the eighteeenth century, and Walter produced a masterpiece of descriptive travel that became the most popular book of maritime adventure of the time. Hill, 1817; Sabin 1625; BdM I, 38.
