Rare copies of the original editions of two of Johan van Wyck's medical treatises: (1) on some rare diseases, and (2) on diseases of the legs. Johan van Wyck (1623- after 1657) was the town surgeon of Rotterdam who also gave demonstrations and lectures for his colleagues. More data regarding his life are hardly obtainable.The other two booklets form part of a conflict among the Rotterdam physicians: (3) by Medical Doctor Willem Vink, a lector and assistant of Johan van Wyck, written in defence of Johan van Wyck against Dr. Cornelis Nieuwaart town physician of Rotterdam who had attacked Van Wyck and Vink in a pamphlet <I>Genees- en heelkonstige overwegingen, over het vyftigtal aanmerkingen [= no. (1)] der Heel en geneeskonst van J. van Wyck ... ter gelegenheit van zekeren handel van Dr. W. Vink ... omstrent een Spine ventose, Briefsgeyze voor gestelt door Corn. Nieuwaart</I>, including a preface in which Nieuwaart Van Wyck and Vink accuses of unprofessional treatment of a 'Spina ventosa' (dactylitis, usually in infants and young children, with enlargement of digits, caseation, sequestration, and sinus formation). Later that year Vink published two more pamphlets on the same accusations: his <I>Nader beschouwing der attestation door Cornelis Nieuwaart M.D. uitgegeven</I> 'by Willem Vink et al.' (Rotterdam, Philip Lozel, 1730), and <I>De dwaasheid en onordentelykheid van Dr. Cornelis Nieuwaarts redenering </I>(Rotterdam, Lozel, 1730), including Johan van Wyck's <I>C. Nieuwaarts, zyne aanval, op den schriften en eene opgegeven attestatie nader aangetoont</I>. Booklet (4) is the defence of Johan van Wyck himself against the same accusations of Nieuwaart.

SMITS, Dirk. De Rottestroom. Rotterdam, P. Losel, J.D. Beman, H. Kentlink, J. Bosch, N. Smithof, J. Losel and J. Burgvliet, 1750.
First edition of the main work of the Remonstrant author Dirk Smits (1702-1753), attractively illustrated by the famous engraver Jan Punt (1711-1779), and dedicated to stadtholder William IV. With preliminary poems by Lucretia Wilhelmina van Merken, K. Westerbaen, Pieter Langendijk, Arnold Hoogvliet and some others. The work is divided into 3 cantos, and concluded by 37 pages of annotations, which contain among other things some interesting topographical information. Smits was a member of Natura et arte and a celebrated author during his lifetime. His fame, however, declined in the nineteenth-century, until Willem Kloos re-discovered the Rotterdam poet in 1909.

First edition of a collection of biblical poems by the Rotterdam Art Society "Natura et Arte", dedicated to Arnold Hoogvliet. In the preface the Society expresses its hope that just like its earlier publication based on Thomas a Kempis the present collection based on the Scriptures will add to the love and beauty of the biblical stories. Laudatory verses are added to the preliminaries by B. Huydecoper, P. van der Schelling, and Korn. Kriek.
