First Illustrated Edition. 8vo. pp. [8], 392, [4]. Vignettes by Antoine Calbet. Series: Collections Edouard Guillaume "Nymphee." Bound in half dark red morocco with marbled boards. Top edge gilt. Original illustrated wraps preserved. Pages are generally clean with occasional mild scattered spotting. Pierre Louys (1870-1925) French poet and novelist who made friends among the Symbolist writers of his day. Louys, along with Andre Gide, Henri de Regnier and Paul Valery founded two literary journals - La Conque (1891) and Le Centaure (1896). According to the Oxford Companion to French Literature - "His wide reputation in his own day rested on Aphrodite: moeurs antiques (1896), a novel of courtesan life in ancient Alexandria, a graceful mixture of licentiousness and erudition, with a continuing attraction for illustrators and fine binders." The first edition of Aphrodite was published in 12mo. without illustrations.
