Bennett, A. A Group of Autograph Letters and other Correspondence ( 7 items) from Arnold Bennett to Mrs W K Clifford, with a recent biography of Mrs Clifford.
Seven pieces of correspondence from the novelist Arnold Bennett to the novelist and dramatist Lucy Clifford, being four Autograph Letters Signed, one Autograph Correspondence Card Signed, one Typed Letter Signed, and one Autograph Fragment Signed, various dates from 1914 ro 1927. The recipient of these letters, Lucy Clifford (Mrs. W. K. Clifford) [1846-1929] was an English novelist, short story writer, dramatist and children's writer. In the 1880s and 1890s she was a well-known literary figure, achieving considerable success particularly with her novels Mrs Keith's Crime (1885) and Aunt Anne (1893). Bennett had a high regard for the latter work, which he mentions in his preface to "The Old Wives' Tale" and one of the letters here. Mrs Clifford is now better known for her close friendships and correspondence, often over many years, with such figures as Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Huxley, James Russell Lowell, Leslie Stephen, and George Eliot. Arnold Bennett, 20 years younger than Lucy Clifford, had first become friendly with her in the early 1900s. His letters and notes to her here (in all about 8 ½ sides) date from 1914 to 1927 and have an easy, familiar tone. The letters are believed to be unpublished save for extracts and references to certain of them in Such Silver Currents, a recent biography of Mrs Clifford, a copy of which is included. In one, 1914, letter, Bennett offers some criticism of the construction of Mrs Clifford's drama "Thomas and the Princess" which had been published in 1909 but which had yet to find a producer. He goes on to discuss possible producers and discusses the tactics of approaching them, recommending that Mrs Clifford change the title and omit the author's name. "You need have no fear that the [theatre] managers will discover the trick. They won't. They wouldn't recognize Measure for Measure if the title were altered." In a later letter Bennett reminisces about a lunch with Henry James.

Chisholm, M. Such Silver Currents : The Story of William and Lucy Clifford, 1845-1929. Lutterworth Press, Cambridge, first edition, 2002.
"This is the first biography of a mathematical genius and his literary wife. The story of their lives, works and friendships reflects the intellectual excitement and the social structure of the age in which they lived. William Clifford was a leading mathematician and an influential philosopher and FRS. A leading champion of Darwin's evolutionary theory, and of scientific methods of reasoning, he sought an understanding of the nature of the universe of the human mind and morality. He was forty years ahead of Einstein in proposing the concept of curved space. Clifford Algebra, which is fundamental to Dirac's theory of the electron, has now become significant in many areas of mathematics, physics and engineering. Sir Roger Penrose O.M. has contributed a personal reflection on William Clifford's mathematics. In 1874 Clifford married Lucy Lane, then already taking her first steps towards success as a novelist. During their four years of marriage, their Sunday salon attracted many famous scientific and literary personalities. After William's early death, Lucy became a close friend and confidante of Henry James. Amongst her wide circle of friends were George Eliot, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy, Olive Wendell Holmes Jr., Thomas Huxley, Leslie Stephen and Virginia Woolf." - from the blurb.
