Wheeler, Richard S. Sam Hook, New York, New York, U.S.A. Walker & Co 1986

Hard cover with terra cotta paper-covered boards and spine, bronze printing on spine, is in NEAR FINE condition. Brodart-wrapped DJ, NOT price-clipped, is NEAR FINE. Meagher County, Montana, was Hereford country. All the ranchers were raising Hereford or Angus cattle -- all except Sam Hook. He was the only holdout, continuing to stock longhorns as he had for years. Since everyone was using public range, there was no way to keep Hook's longhorn bulls from breeding with Hereford cows, thus lowering the value of the Hereford herds. The ranchers formed an association whose number-one goal was to rid the county of Hook's longhorns, even if it meant getting rid of Hook himself. Sheriff Oglesby did not care one way or another what kind of cattle anyone had as long as it ended up as steak on his plate. Until Sam Hook came into his life, Oglesby's only worry was whether he would be re-elected. When the Association ordered Oglesby to confront Sam Hook, Oglesby learned that his tin star was no match for the old man's courage and determination. A sometimes funny, sometimes brutal, always action-packed western drama about what it means to be a man.
