Woodcut book of costume <B>ABRIDGEMENT, AN-</B>, of geography. Adorned with cuts representing the dress of each country. For the juvenile; or, child's library. London, John Marshall, (1800).
Delightful pictorial children's world geography, teaching in short notes to very attractive costume-plates about the main countries and peoples of the world. The book starts with an introductory survey of geographical terminology, and is divided into four parts, each preceeded by a charmingly designed allegorical figure of a continent and its general geographical description. The engraved frontispiece shows a gentleman sitting in his library with a globe on the table and a leaf of paper with geometrical figures and drawing instruments in his hand, teaching a young boy standing in front of him and holding an opened book in his hands. It has the publisher's full address, and is dated September 13, 1800. The costume-plates of Europe start with: "A French Lady of Quality", "A Spanish Gentlemen", "A Portugese Merchant", etc., showing 19 male and female costumes in all, of Italy, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Russia, European Turkey, Switzerland, Holland, England, Denmark, Sweden, Lapland, Scotland, Ireland, etc. Of Asia there are 10 male and female costume-plates, of Arabia, Persia, China, Tartary, India, "Indostan", Japan, Bombay, Russia in Asia, and Asian Turkey. Africa has 6 costume-plates, of Egypt, Barbary, a Hottentot Woman, inhabitants of the Islands in the Indian Ocean, of the Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, and of the Canaries and Madeira. America has no less than 16 male and female costume-plates, of the Indians of Nova Scotia, Canada, New England, New York, Pensylvania, Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia, the costume of a Peruvian Prince, of a Spanish Lady of Chili, the King of Florida, a Mexican Woman, a Brasilian Chief, of the inhabitants of the British Islands in the West Indies, of the French, Dutch and Danish West-Indian Islands, of the Spanish West-Indian Islands, and of a female of Otaheite. The little book seems fairly rare, with four copies known in British Libraries, but none in American Institutional Libraries.
Good copy of a rare and delightful juvenile, kept in modern box.- (Binding sl. dam. at spine, inner boards of front cover lost, with traces left of the labels once mounted on both covers).
