Stilistisch gesehen spiegelt sich in diesem Mikrokosmos der Einfluss der Volksmusik auf Bartoks Schaffen wider. Die verwendeten Rhythmen und Harmonien lassen eine Musik entstehen, die heute genauso modern ist wie zu der Zeit ihrer Entstehung. Die 153 Stücke des Zyklus sind in sechs Bänden erschienen, zusammengestellt nach ihrem technischen und musikalischen Schwierigkeitsgrad. Jeder Band enthält eine Einführung von Bartoks Sohn Peter.
