Valuable scholarly edition of the "Metamorphoses" by Antoninus, published by Verheyk with extensive notes and comments and with index. The Greek and Latin text runs parallel on opposite pages.

Vellum, spine gilt-lined with title-label and gilt flowers in the compartments, with gilt zig-zag borders on sides with small gilt flowers at the four corners, and with the large gilt figure of Minerva with the legend "Minerva Dordracena" within a richly gilt wreath om cemtre, remnants of ties. Rare first Dutch edition in a fine prize-binding of the famous educational children's books by the German teacher and pedagogue Joachim Hendrik Campe (1746-1818). The book is full of wise lessons and advice for a happy and prosperous mature life, the first part based on Campe's own experience in life, and the second on the famous letters of Lord Chesterfield to his son. It was translated from the German 'Theophron, oder der erfahrne Rathgeber für die unerfahrne Jugend', first published at Hamburg in 1783. The present title was probably one of the least successful of Campe's books in the Netherlands, no second Dutch edition was published.
Good copy in Dordrecht prize-binding, here with small coat of arms instead of the 'Minerva Dordracena' of the Latin School prize-bindings, but without a prize certificate.- (Binding very sl. stained).
