Neil Munro (1863-1930) was born in the little town of Inveraray, Scotland near the head of Loch Fyne in Argyll, an area of exceptional beauty which was to influence him all his life. Both his mother and grandmother were native speakers of Gaelic and it is from them that the young Neil received his knowledge of the old language and culture. Doom Castle was his fourth book, one of three (Gilian the Dreamer, Doom Castle, The Shoes of Fortune) loosely connected with the aftermath of the Jacobite Rising of 1745. On one level, Doom Castle is a Gothic tale of intrigue and romance, but at a deeper level it shows the hopelessness of the Jacobite cause in the face of the new Hanoverian order - a hopelessness symbolised by the decaying castle of the Baron of Doom compared with the fine Enlightenment castle of the Duke of Argyll in Inveraray.
