An excellent novel about early aviation, World War I air warfare, and love. London-born novelist Nevil Shute Norway worked as an aeronautical engineer at Vickers before setting up his own airship company, and served as a Naval Commander during the Second World War, and had links with Secret Intelligence. Moving to Australia in 1949, he based seven of his novels there (including 'On the Beach' and 'A Town Like Alice'). Shute became one of the bestselling authors of the 50s and 60s, appealing to a broad international market attracted by strong story lines which were always meticulously researched.
