Original cloth, blind frames to boards, gilt title to front, marbled edges. Considerable shelfwear, some paint spatters to font board, front joint starting, hinges cracked but secure, front free endpaper partially detached, a few cracks to text block. Owner annotation to front free endpaper, embossed stamp to title page, minor foxing to a few leaves, internally clean. A solid copy. * Fifth edition. Baker's was the standard treatise during the Victorian period, a time that witnessed a dramatic shift in English and American the culture regarding burials. The first edition was published in 1855 and the book reached its sixth and final edition in 1898 (with a 1901 supplement). All editions are scarce. London: Printed for the Company of Stationers, 1613. [i], 176, [8] pp. Octavo (5-1/2" x 3-1/2"). Contemporary limp vellum with lapped edges, early hand-lettered title to spine, remnants of ties to boards. Some rubbing to extremities, hinges cracked, text block loose and cracked in a few places. Later bookplate (of John Camp Williams) to front pastedown. Two tiny later stamps to title page, early annotations to margins throughout, interior otherwise clean. * Originally written in Latin in 1523, this work contains two dialogues between a doctor of divinity and a student of English law. It popularized canonist learning on the nature and object of law, the religious and moral standards of law, the foundations of the common law and other issues regarding the jurisdiction of Parliament. A very important work in the development of equity, Doctor and Student appeared in numerous editions. An authority well into the eighteenth century, it influenced several writers, including Blackstone. The ESTC locates 6 copies in North America, 2 in law libraries (Harvard and Library of Congress).
