PARKER, Samuel: Journal of an Exploring Tour Beyond the Rocky Mountains... Published by the Author Ithaca, New York, 1838.
First edition: a most attractive copy in a handsome binding.

Parker's exploring party was appointed by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, and as Sabin says (quoting the North American Review), 'a leading object of exploration was "to become acquainted with the situation of the remote Indian tribes, and their disposition in regard to teachers of Christianity..."'. The book contains considerable information on geology, geography, climate, and manners and customs of the natives, as well as additional information on the Columbia River and the Oregon Territory. There is also a vocabulary of English words and their equivalents in Indian languages (Nez Perce, Klicatat, Calapooa, and Chenook). Parker (1779-1866) accompanied the party from Council Bluffs to Walla Walla. Graff says (and Wheat concurs) that 'the map is the earliest... of the Oregon interior with a pretense to accuracy...'.
Graf, 3192; Howes, P-89; Wagner-Camp, 70:1.

Octavo, with an engraved plate and a large folding map of the Oregon Territory; an excellent copy in polished calf, ornately gilt, by Lloyd; armorial bookplate.
