Three issue of the Historical Fine Arts Series: Vol 1. No. 2, January 22, 1894; Vol. 1 No. 3, January 29, 1894; Vol. 1, No. 4, February 5, 1894, and Volume 1 No. 5, February 12, 1894. Oblong 4to. The World's Columbian Exposition or Chicago World's Fair was held in1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' discovery of the New World. The fair had a profound effect on architecture, the arts, Chicago's self-image and American industrial optimism. The exposition was located in Jackson Park and on the Midway Plaisance in the neighborhoods of South Shore, Jackson Park Highlands, Hyde Park and Woodlawn -- much of it a sterile piece of sand and swamp prior to the Exhibition. The layout of the fairgrounds was created by Frederick Law Olmsted and Daniel Burnham was Director the works of the Fair. It was commonly known as the "White City" or "Magic City," and was the setting for Eric Larson's book "The Devil in the White City." 18 issues were originally published. Each issue of the portfolio includes full-page sepia photographs measuring 11" x 9" depicting scenes of the interior and exterior exhibits. Covers have become detached on Nos. 2 and 3 but are present with some chipping. An important documentation of one of the nineteenth centuries great events. Relatively scarce. Volume 2 good; Volume 3 very good; Volume 4-5 near fine condition. No Jacket Original Wraps Oblong 4to
