9 magnificent drawings of triumphal arches and funeral monuments erected in Sienna 1715-1737 <B>DRAWINGS</B>. 9 Drawings of thriumphal arches and catafalques or funeral monuments erected in Sienna on the occasion of various festivities between the years 1715 and 1737. The funeral monuments were intended for a grand master of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, two Grand dukes of Tuscany and a Grand Duchess. (Sienna, 1715-1737).
Original designs for 5 triumphal arches and 4 catafalques or temporary funeral monuments, all erected on different locations in Sienna, such as the Cathedral, the piazza before the Cathedral, Palazzo Piccolomini and the Porta Santuccio. The triumphal arches have been erected on the occasion of the entry of Alessandro Zondadari, the new bishop of Sienna on 11 August 1715. Zondadari was member of one of the most influential and powerful families residing in Sienna (drawings 1-5; see also 8).The catafalques or funeral monuments were intended for the last dukes of the Medici family: the Grand duke of Tuscany Cosimo III de Medici (1642-1723) (drawing 9), for his wife Margarita Luisa d'Orleans, the daughter of Gaston, duke of Orleans and brother of King Louis XIII, who had married Cosimo III in 1661 and died in 1721 (drawing 6), and for their son Giovanni Gastone de Medici (1671-1737), the very latest duke (drawing 7). A fourth catafalque was for the Siennese Marc Antonio Zondadari, who from 1720 till his death on June 16th 1722, was the 64th Grand Master of the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem and Malta. He was buried in Malta (drawing 8; see also 1-5).<I>List of the drawings:</I>1.
