Erstausgabe einer visionären Schrift und sehr frühen vernichtenden Kritik des Hexenglaubens, die in der Einsicht gipfelt, dass es doch gar keine Dämonen brauche, um Zaubereien zu erklären, da dafür rationale Erklärungen zur Hand seien. Anlass zu seinem Buch gab Pomponazzi eine der vielen angeblichen Wunderheilungen, an die das Volk nur zu gerne glauben wollte. Der italienische Humanist zeigt auf, dass solche scheinbar wunderbare Wirkungen sich sämtlich auf natürliche Ursachen zurückführen liessen, wobei er auch geheime Kräfte der Kräuter und Steine sowie die Einflüsse der Gestirnkonstellationen gelten lässt. Der Hexenverfolgung frönten sowohl die protestantischen, als auch die katholischen Länder und ihren Höhepunkt erreichten sie in den neunziger Jahren des 16. Jahrhunderts und den späten Zwanzigern des 17. Jahrhunderts. Das Manuskript des bereits 1520 geschriebenen aber unter Verschluss gehaltenen Werks wurde von einem Schüler Pomponazzis, Guglielmo Gratarolo (1516-1568), mit nach Basel genommen, wohin er 1552 als Glaubensflüchtling floh. Er verfasste ein aufschlussreiches Vorwort und liess es endlich durch Sebastian Henricpetri in einer unbekannten Auflagenhöhe drucken. Chief work by the Italian Renaissance philosopher Pietro Pomponazzi, in which he in confronting the subject of the existence of demons and preternatural causes of miracles and apparitions broaches ideas which herald the modern field of psychology. Pomponazzi attacks the root of this presupposition by showing that the existence of demons is not rationally demonstrable and that, in any case, it would not explain miraculous events. It is not rationally demonstrable because, from a strictly Aristotelian viewpoint, an immaterial being cannot directly act on a corporeal one - in his view, the motions of heavenly bodies acted as intermediaries between eternal beings and those which were generated and perishable. Moreover, if an incorporeal being were to act directly on a corporeal one, it too would be changed, which is unthinkable given the unchangeable nature of incorporeal entities. The basic elements of the author's doctrines on the occult, astrology, demons and miracles were the common property of much scientific thinking in the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. It was not the elimination of demons or angels, the acceptance of magical transformations through occult powers, or even the reduction of divine activity to impersonal forces that was novel in itself. It was Pomponazzi's achievement to go beyond earlier hesitations and qualifications, particularly in regard to the astrological determination of religious belief. The essential core of Pomponazzi's method eliminated the constraints and hesitations of earlier thinkers regarding the application of natural laws to religious phenomena. For the author philosophy is the supreme truth, the final judge of all phenomena. The conclusions of philosophy must be stated, in the end, without parables and paradigms in the unveiled and plain language of the Peripatetics. Il testo del corso, raccolto da un abile reportator, coglie 'dal vivo' la parola irriverente e paradossale di Pomponazzi, in un latino che combina tecnicismi scolastici e coloriture volgareggianti spinte fino al turpiloquio.
