"[LINDNER, Richard.] HOFFMANN, E.T.A. Tales of Hoffmann. Thick large octavo, 509pp. First edition of this edition of the most extraordinary tales of the fantastic and the grotesque conceived before Poe, in fact, the mentor to Poe, Hugo, Stevenson and a host of others. The translation is not credited, but Christopher Lazare has edited the collection and written the introduction. An extremely uncommon edition under an almost unknown imprint, constituting one of the earliest, if not the earliest works of book art by the wonderful German artist Richard Lindner after his departure from Germany, twelve in color and sixteen in black-and-white. Very good in publisher's cloth-covered boards and illustrated dust jacket, the latter with a mid-size v-shaped chip to the upper edge. Very scarce.

(POE, Edgar Allan). Manuscript Found in a Bottle in THE GIFT: A CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR'S PRESENT FOR 1836. Philadelphia: Carey & Hart, [1835].
Intricately embossed red morocco with a ferocious eagle at the center and gilt lettering on the spine. BAL 10146 & 16126. The first appearance inprint of Poe's macabre tale of the sea later collected in TALES OF THE GROTESQUE. This is also Poe's first appearance in THE GIFT and only his fourth appearance in a book. Also includes "An Unwritten Drama of Lord Byron" by Washington Irving. Very early owner inscription on third blank dated 9 October 1835. Illustrated with 8 (of 9) steel engravings, lacking a portrait having nothing to do with Poe's tale which has no illustration to accompany it. In our experience, this particular year is often found lacking something, and in this case what it lacks is rather insignificant..

First Edition, leather, Bright, clean copy with only mild rubbing. Close to Fine..
