Gloeden, Baron Wilhelm Von: Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden 1856-1931, Sydney Martin Browne Fine Art 1999
New
Exhibition catalogue of male nude photographs, mostly from Italy, in the "physique" style by Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden, Vincenzo Galdi, Gugliemo von Pluschow, Nino Longobardi, Herb Ritts, Robert Mapplethorpe and Bruce Weber. An important part of gay history. Text by Jonathan Turner. Already a collectors item. Baron Wilhelm von Gloeden (September 16, 1856-February 16, 1931) was a German photographer who worked mainly in Italy. He is mostly known for his pastoral nude studies of Sicilian boys, which usually featured props such as wreaths or amphoras suggesting a setting in the Greece or Italy of antiquity. From a modern standpoint, his work is commendable due to his controlled use of lighting as well as the often elegant poses of his models. Innovative use of photographic filters and special body makeup contribute to the artistic perfection of his works. Famous in his own day, his work was subsequently eclipsed for close to a century, only to re-emerge in recent times as "the most important gay visual artist of the pre-World War I era" according to Thomas Waugh First Edition Pamphlet 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall

Parr, Martin & The Editors of Portfolio Magazine. MARTIN PARR PORTFOLIO MAGAZINE SPEZIAL FOTOGRAFIE WITH SIGNED EXHIBITION CATALOG Stern Portfolio Library of Photography. Hamburg, Germany: Stern Gruner + Jahr AG, 2004.
Softcover. First Edition. First Printing. 96 pages. As New. Retrospective collection of photographs. Special limited and numbered edition. Number 36 in the continuing series by Stern. Oversize-volume format. A very large and thick book. Pictorial softcovers, as issued. Photographs by Martin Parr. Exhibition Catalog in its own glassine jacket. Without DJ, as issued. Numbered edition by the now-legendary photography series whose brilliant concept is to devote each issue to a particular photographer. The collection consists of some of the photographer's most representative and finest work. The cover shows Parr emergent from a (fake) shark's wide-open mouth, with a deadpan look on his face. It brilliantly parodies Peter Beard's celebrated "macho" shot, which shows the latter emergent from the mouth of a (real) crocodile, going about his writing as if his life were in no danger at all. Includes selections from some of Martin Parr's best books, notably "West Bay", "Benidorm", and other cult classics. Parr is an ironist (who is often mistaken for being a satirist) whose oblique, indirect, and witty approach leaves a strong aftertaste. It is not possible to understand the art and photography of our time without taking stock of Martin Parr's work and achievement. The Portfolio Magazine/Spezial Fotografie Series have become eminently collectible and now include contributions by Peter Beard, Elliott Erwitt, William Klein, James Nachtwey, Francis Giacobetti, Annie Leibovitz, Nan Goldin, Mario Testino, David LaChapelle, Herb Ritts, Ellen von Unwerth, Giorgia Fiorio, Horst, and Andreas H. Bitesnich, among others. This Issue is now completely sold out. It comes with a copy of the Exhibition Catalog marking his landmark inaugural one-man show in Chicago, prominently and beautifully signed in blue pen in front by Martin Parr. The photographe r no longer signs memorabilia items, making this a very scarce and desirable collectible item. This is one of extremely few copies of the Magazine Portfolio still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed set thus. A great photography series. A flawless set. (SEE ALSO OTHER MARTIN PARR, PORTFOLIO MAGAZINE AND SPEZIAL FOTOGRAFIE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3570194450. Signed by Author.
