SCLATER, Philip Lutley (1829-1913) and Michael R. Oldfield THOMAS (1858- 1929): The Book of Antelopes,
London: Taylor & Francis for R.H. Porter, 1894-1900. 4 volumes (bound from the original parts), quarto. (11 3/8 x 8 5/8 inches). Letterpress titles with wood-engraved vignettes, C2 in vol.II a cancel. 100 hand-coloured lithographed plates after Joseph Wolf (51), J. Smit (32), J.G. Keulemans (1), Waterhouse Hawkins (2), H. Leutemann (1) and 13 unassigned, all lithographed by Smit and printed by Hanhart, 121 wood-engraved text illustrations, wood-engraved vignettes on title pages, extra-illustrated at the end of vols.I-III with the temporary titles and the contents leaves. Contemporary green half morocco over green cloth-covered marbled paper-covered boards, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered and numbered in gilt, gilt armorial crests of the Hanbury Barclay family at the foot of each spine, original upper and lower wrappers to the 17 (in 16) original parts bound at the end of the appropriate volume, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. A very fine copy of the first edition of this spectacular illustrated work on one of the most beautiful of all animal families, many pictured by Joseph Wolf - one of the greatest animal portraitists of the 19th century This work had an interesting genesis: the majority of the plates were prepared prior to 1878 for Sir Victor Brooke (1843-1891) by J. Smit and Joseph Wolf for the former's proposed work on antelopes. This work was never published, and, after Brooke's death in 1891, Brooke's son gave Sclater his father's manuscript notes and the plates. The notes were discarded as unusable, but the plates were employed, with new text by Sclater and Oldfield Thomas. Mendelssohn I, p. 292; Nissen ZBI 3784; Wood 558
