Gayre: Who is Who in Clan Gayre, Scotland Armorial Limited 1962
Near Very Good

Limited Edition of 250 copies. 78 pages, size approximately 9 inches tall by 5.5 inches. Illustrated with coloured plates and black and white line drawings. "This book sets out to provide an account of the Council and Constitution of the Clan, along with the arms of its gentry and the names and addresses of others who have actively associated them selves with it. Biographies are also given where these are upon our files. But of the thousands of the name, many hundreds of whom are contained in our records, only a small proportion can be included here on account of the prohibitive costs of printing. Many Clans and Names function through Clan Societies. These are, however, substitutes for the Clan or Family as the society in itself. In the case of our House there is no Clan Society, the Family continuing to function, as it was always intended, as a Clan or Society. Its officers are, therefore, those of an ancient clan society, and fixed by definite rules of custom and inheritance. Nevertheless, in the nominations within the gift of the Chief of the Name, ample scope is given for those who may not have an inherited role to take a full part in the Clan organisation and its affairs. In 1959 there was formed in Edinburgh, at the instance of the Lord Provost, a Federation of Scottish Societies of the world. Among those who attended the original meeting called by the Lord Provost in the City Chambers was the writer, and the House of Gayre, as a Clan and not as a society as such, was among the very first to be enrolled as one of the organisations in this World Federation. The Clan is represented for the purpose of meetings of that Federation by the writer in his capacity as holder of the undifferenced arms of the Name, and in default of him the next in succession to those arms. In addition the Clan is represented on the older body. The Council of Scottish Clan Societies, by the Chief and his Apparent. In the following account the blazons of arms are only given as a general rule in the case of cadets, or in those cases where the sable fleur-de-lys (to show association with the Clan) has been taken into the arms. In others, arms are sometimes shown but the failure to record arms does not necessarily imply that the persons concerned are non-armigerous. Lammas 1961. R. GAYRE OF GAYRE AND NIGG." Very Good

pp: 120. Seven pages of introduction; seventeen pages of alphabetically arranged family names ( there are a number of small pencil notations to this section); balance consists of colour-illustrated pages depicting the tartan, arms and a small painting of a clan member , in tartan, indulging in a variety of pastimes from fishing to a little gentle warfare and mayhem , all copyrighted by W & A.K. Johnston Ltd. of Edinburgh. There is no publication date for this edition, which may well be the first Canadian, but the latest date in the text is 1935. However, judging by the general style of the illustrations and the typeface , I suspect that this may be a new edition of something originally published around 1900. There is a little wear to the spine and extremeties but overall it is a nice item. Inscription in Gaelic to ffep. No Jacket Decorative Cloth 4 1/4" x 6"
