At the time, most military strategists still considered observation and reconnaissance the only role of aircraft, but it became increasingly clear in the opening months of the war that armed aircraft were to revolutionize modern warfare. In his new book, Edward Sims traces the development of the tactics and strategy of aerial combat through the two world wars, the Korean conflict and the war in Vietnam; in Sopwith Camels, Spades, Fokkers, Mustangs, Spitfires, MIG's, F. 84's and the supersonic Phantom fighter-bombers; flown by the great ace pilots like Rickenbacker, Richthofen, Eric Hartmann, John "Cat Eyes" Cunningham and the American ace veteran of three wars, Robin Olds. Mr. Sims has interviewed almost all of the still-living great aces, and their truly exciting stories are spaced throughout the book. He has skillfully balanced these dramatic accounts with his own understanding of the technical problems of air battles. The result is both entertaining reading and an informative analysis of the development of tactical air power."- From dust jacket. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "Edward H. Sims was born in 1923 in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Upon graduating from Wofford College he served three years in the Army Air Forces, enlisting as a cadet and serving as a fighter pilot on combat operations with the Eighth Air Force in Europe over Germany.
