Tallis, John: Tallis's History and Description of the Crystal palace and the Exhibition of the World's Industry in 1851 [Vol. 2] London and New York The London Printing and Publishing Company 1851
Good Engravings from Bibby et al Based Upon Drawings / Daguerreotypes By Beard Mayall et al
This fascinating book was produced to record the Great Exhibition that was held in the Crystal Palace in 1851. There are 67 steel engravings which range from large scale views of the exhibition to illustrations of individual exhibits, such as the revolving bookcase. The text starts with a description of the beauty of that French import, papier mache, which was displayed at the exhibition with great skill by Jennings and Bettridge who made a piano case from it. There are chapters featuring the wonders of industry from around the world, covering safety apparatus for mine shafts to different types of wallpaper. The volume ends with a description of Coventry, which was apparently the international centre for ribbon making! It is truly a fascinating and well illustrated book. 262 pages. Full gilt leather spine with contrasting leather lable. Green grained cloth boards and Florentine marbled end papers. a.e.g. There is a list of illustrations to the front and, as is quite common with this book, it cannot be fully collated against the actual contained illustrations. There are two more illustrations present than required and nine of the illustrations are different to those stated. Corners and edges of leather worn. Damp stain to edge of upper and lower boards, but this does not penetrate to the inside. The fabric is starting to split along the rear board edge. With the exception of a small stain to the corner of two pages, the interior is clean and free from any foxing. Note, whilst this is a heavy book there willl not be a postage surcharge as I have built this into the price of the book. Half-Leather 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall
