Bagossy, Renate: The aim of the torturers, the tomb-like dungeon and symbols in Edgar Allan Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum" GRIN VERLAG; GRIN VERLAG, August 2008, Besorgungstitel - vorauss. Lieferzeit 3-5 Tage. ISBN: 3640129482
Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject American Studies - Literature, printed single-sided, grade: 2 (B), Martin Luther University (Anglistics/American Studies), course: Edgar Allan Poe, language: English, abstract: Edgar Allan Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum was first published in The Gift: A Christmas and New Year's Present (1843) and revised for publication in The Broadway Journal of 17 May 1845. Although by this time the Spanish Inquisition was officially over, the American public was still interested in such topics. During the nineteenth century a fascination with death evolved. People were interested in gothic novels, were fascinated by horror stories, they loved tales that included elements of magic, supernatural and torture. This morbid fascination with death received its most intensive literary treatment at the hands of Edgar Allan Poe. In The Pit and the Pendulum Poe uses all the elements people were fond of: adventure, supernatural, horror, death, being helpless etc. He moves the sensibility of the reader and evokes a certain emotional reaction. In this term paper I am going to concentrate on how Poe achieved a certain effect with his story. First I will take a closer look at the prisoner's constant escapes, point out that most of these escapes are unbelievable and try to find out what the aim of his torturers might be. I will speculate on possibilities, what could have happened to the prisoner if he had made other choices during his stay in the dungeon. Then I will illustrate that there are certain parallels between a tomb and the dungeon in which the prisoner has to endure humiliation and agony, so the victim appears to be buried alive. Hope is the most important property he has, it seems as if nobody could take it away from him, and with the help of hope he survives his stay in the dungeon. Whether the story is based on a real or on a dream experience is pointed out shortly. Finally I will present and analyze the symbols that can be found in the story. These symbols underlie and develop the aforementioned theories further, it seems as if the prisoner is not only buried alive in a tomb, but he seems to be in hell already. The individual elements of this short story can not be separated totally from each other, as these said elements often overlap. Sometimes, I feel, it is not possible to discuss something in full detail in one part of this work, as the same elements appear later again in another context, where the discussion can assume new and different aspects.

Ed. ISBN: 9781596062924
US first edition, first printing, bound in fantastic, real calf-leather by signedfiction, embossed in gold with the image of a pentagram, five raised bands, it perfectly resembles the prop used in the film "The Ninth Gate", starring Johnny Depp. Signed of course by Arturo Perez-Reverte, numbered out of 5 leather-bound copies only, incredible beautifully hand(!)-illustrated by Vincent Chong on first title page. Printed in two colors on 80# Finch, with five full-color interior plates, and sixteen duotone images by Vincent Chong. Absolute mint condition, from a smoke-free environment. Aristide Torchia is of course a fictional character. The events of the novel take place hundreds of years after Torchia's death, and he is referenced only as a historical figure. Torchia was born in 1620. He apprenticed in Leyden under the Elzevir family. After returning to Venice he published small works on philosophical and esoteric themes. In 1666, Torchia published De Umbrarum Regni Novem Portis (The Nine Doors to the Kingdom of Shadows), which was in turn based on the Delomelanicon, or Invocation of Darkness, a work supposedly written by Lucifer and that would allow the reader to summon devils. The Inquisition condemned Torchia for magic and witchcraft and burned him at the stake in 1667. A possible real-life inspiration for this character may have been Giordano Bruno, who, like Torchia, was an Italian mystic and philosopher whose controversial books earned him the scorn of the Inquisition, who burned him at the stake in 1600.(Wikipedia). The ancient looking woodcut engravings in the novel were designed by the Spanish artist Francisco Sole. All books shipped protected by bubble-wrap and strong card box. Haase, Claudia: Native and Roman Catholic religion in Anaya s Bless me, Ultima Akademische Schriftenreihe, Bd. V36905, GRIN VERLAG, November 2011, Besorgungstitel - vorauss. Lieferzeit 3-5 Tage. ISBN: 3656058121
Seminar paper from the year 1999 in the subject American Studies - Literature, printed single-sided, grade: 1,0/A, University of Dusseldorf Heinrich Heine (Anglistik II, Amerikastudien), course: Latino/a Literature, 7 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In the following paper I want to examine the traits of Native and Roman Catholic religion described in Rudolfo Anaya's novel Bless me, Ultima1, which was first published by TQS Publications, Berkeley, California in 1972. It shall be revealed how the different characters in the novel deal with the Mexican pagan past and the Roman Catholic influences which affect and determine their lives. I chose to examine the most important persons separately, to stress the individuality of searching a way through the number of beliefs which are offered to each of us during our lives. Nevertheless the complexity of personal relations and their mutual influences are regarded as well; although a comprehensive analysis would also have been possible without splitting the story. According to the fact that every person is dealt with individually, the conclusion shall provide the reader with an overall picture of the relationships between the main characters in the novel. Native religion touches the region of curanderismo and witchcraft, which certainly is an interesting chapter, but has to be dealt with only as far as it is necessary. On the other hand there is Roman Catholic religion, which the Spanish under Hernan Cortes brought to America. One chapter is dedicated to The Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of the Chicanos- the descendants of Indians and Spaniards. Bless me, Ultima as a work of the Mexican American author Rudolfo Anaya represents the religious opposites Mexican Americans have to deal with and it shall therefore serve as a source of examples to show the complexity of Chicano beliefs.
