KLINKHAMER, G. Mennonite Westzaandam school-prize Leerzaame Zinnebeelden en Bybel-Stoffen, bestaande in Het Leven van den Propheet Elisa, Moses Aanspraak aan Israel, en de Verheugde Zacharias. Tweden Druk.- IDEM. Stichtelyke Zinnebeelden en Bybel-Stoffen. Bestaande in Jacobs Sterfbedt, 't XXXVIIIste Cap. van Job, Ondergang van Tyrus, Pinksterfeest, Marteldood van Stephanus, en de Triompboog des Geloofs, uit de Heb. XI. Twede Druk. Amsterdam, J. ter Beek & K. de Veer, J. Hayman, 1756 & 1742.
Two finely illustrated educational emblem books, both with several biblical stories in verse added. Ad 1: The twenty-five emblems each have a motto and a four-line verse underneath, and all are accompanied by lengthy poems with biblical quotations at the end. The emblems were designed by Jan Caspar Philips, etcher and draughtsman, especially of topographical prints, and active at Amsterdam from 1736 to 1775. The engraver, Simon Fokke (1712-1784), was a pupil of Jan Caspar Philips, and closely worked together with his teacher, like in the present work. Ad 2: The forty emblems also have a motto and a quatrain, and quotations from the Scriptures as well. They are also accompanied by extensive poetry, with bibilical quotations added. Here the emblems were newly engraved by Adriaan van der Laan (1684-after 1755), mainly after designs by Arnold Houbraken (1660-1719), which had been used earlier in Frans van Hoogstraten's "Schoole der Wereld" from 1682. Here they were enlarged with five new emblems, probably designed by the new engraver Adriaan van der Laan. The subjects of the emblems are mainly educational notions, like vocation, gratitude, prayer, poverty of mind, hunger, hospitality, hope, improvement, recreation, etc. Govert Klinkhamer (1702-1774), was the son of a rich silk merchant and Mennonite in the Lamist Congregation at Amsterdam.
Good copy, with a printed school-prize certificate, reading: "Om dat Gerrit Jansz. Noomen recited the lessons of the Frisian Mennonite Church at Westzaandam well, he has been given this price by the Servants of this Community, in order to add to his piety and knowledge), signed by Dirk Cornelisz. Zorgdrager and Pieter Lijnsz. Rogge, and dated Westzaandam, February 22, 1761.

(BOEKHOLT, JOH.). 't Geopende, en Bereidwillige Herte, Na den Heere Jesus, voor 't Oog gestelt, door vyftien Sinnebeelden, en onderscheyden in twee Deelen. Met een Aanvoegsel van Gesangen, Over het Lijden Christi, en andere Geestelijke Stoffen. Door J.B.B.S. Amsterdam, Johannes Boekholt, 1693.
Rare first edition of a beautifully illustrated spiritual emblem book by the Amsterdam publisher and bookseller, Johannes Boekholt, who also first published the works of Bunyan in Dutch. The two frontispieces are variants on the same theme: a scholar in a library or bookshop at a table on which the Bible and the Tablets of Moses are lying, with a line of prayer leaving his mouth. This line is printed upside down, probably because the text had to begin at the man's mouth. The fifteen finely etched emblems all involve the Heart of Jesus with small angels holding it and presenting it for use to men, women and children, who worship the heart but also abuse it, including also a curious view of a crucifixion. At the end songs on Christ's Passion are added as well, set to popular tunes. According to Hollstein was Schoonebeek the artist only of the two frontispieces. A. Schoonebeek (ca. 1658-1714), etcher and print publisher, was a pupil of Romeyn de Hooghe and went at the turn of 1697 and 1698 to Moscov to work for the Russian Czar, Peter the Great. A publisher's catalogue of five pages is bound in at the end, with the books still divided according to their format: folio, octavo and duodecimo.
Good copy.- (Binding sl. soiled and part of the vellum binding on front cover which originally consisted of two joined pieces now sl. loosening; sl. traces of use).
