468pp. Brown full leather binding by R.W. Smith, gilt filletted, gilt dentelles (exterior and interior), 5 raised bands gilt lettering and decoration to spine, all edges gilt. Illustrated with over 100 full-page and 300 smaller engravings. Contains 3 sections ; 1) From the Alps to the Arno by Karl Stieler, 2) From the Arno to the Tiber by Edward Paulus, and 3) From the Tiber to Etna by Woldemar Kaden. Front cover is detached but present, tape and tape residue on joints, covers edgeworn and scuffed. Foxing on title page and preliminary pages, and marginal water-staining and foxing to pages 463-468, occasional other foxing. Needs repair but will make a very handsome book after restoration. Hard Cover Folio - over 12" - 15" tall

An attractive binding, a little bit rubbed. Overall mostly very clean. A little bit of fading on spine of a few volumes. Vol. 27 leather is a bit cracked top side of spine (but nothing loose). A very good set. Contains many works by well-known authors, published here for the first time. The first editor was William Makepeace Thackeray and the journal specialized in the serialization of novels. This included the work of Anthony Trollope, Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot and Thomas Hardy. The Cornhill Magazine also published the poetry of Alfred Tennyson and Robert Browning. The sale of the magazine, at a shilling, exceeded all expectations, and the first number sold 110, 000 copies. The Cornhill Magazine ceased publication in 1975.
