Jean-Andre Venel (1740-1791) was a Genevese physician who studied dissection at Montpellier at the age of 39, and in 1780, established the first orthopaedic institute in the world at Orbe, in Canton Waadt.
This was the first true hospital that dealt specifically with the treatment for crippled children's skeletal deformities. Venel recorded and published all his methods and for this was known as the first true orthopaedist. He is also regarded as the father of orthopaedics, as his institute acted as a model for hospitals throughout Europe. Venel stressed the importance of sunlight and made various braces and appliances at the workshops within the institute.

Rare first edition of a medical treatise on problems of the human esophagus or gullet, describing and depicting new instruments for removing by way of the mouth any odd pieces of food or other things stuck in a person's gullet, by A.J. Venel, surgeon at Orbe. Venel also invented the extension bed, and founded the first orthopaedic hospital. The newly invented instruments are clearly illustrated on the large folding plate.

Waadt), Schüler von Tronchin und Cabanis, ließ sich in Yverdon nieder und eröffnete dort eine Hebammenschule. Die glückliche Heilung eines mit krummen Füßen geborenen Kindes brachte ihn zur Orthopädie. Er gründete in Orbe (Waadtland) eine orthopäd. Heilanstalt, erfand die erste Streckmaschine (Streckbett) und wurde so zum Begründer der modernen Orthopädie. - Titel von I mit hinterlegtem Einriß, Titel von II gering fleckig und demselben alten Namenszug wie III.
