DUCHAMP. View Magazine. Marcel Duchamp Number, vol. 5, no. 1. New York. March 1945.
One of of 100 numbered large-paper copies, apart from the regular edition of the magazine, with a reproduction of Pharmacy [Schwarz 283], hand-coloured by Duchamp and signed, numbered and dated in pencil 'M. Duchamp 45', copy number 56 in the original cloth-backed boards and very rare dust-jacket, with corresponding red stamp '56%' on front board. This issue of View, as well as having the smoking bottle cover designed by Duchamp, also carried the first English translations of a number of classic essays on Duchamp: Andre Breton's 'Lighthouse of the Bride'; Gabrielle Buffet's 'Magic Circles'; Robert Desnos' 'Rrose Selavy'; as well as contributions by James Thrall Soby, Harriet and Sidney Janis & Nicolas Calas. Also includes Frederick J. Kiesler's 'Les Larves d'Imagie d'Henri Robert Marcel Duchamp', a triptych, which, when unfolded represents the three walls of Duchamp's studio on 14th Street in New York. The cut-out flaps, when bent toward the centre, transform the interior wall into a vision of the 'Mariee mise a nu'. [Schwarz 508].This deluxe copy of View not only has the signed Pharmacy print, but also contains, on the rear endpaper, the signatures of all the major contributors to the Duchamp issue; includes the signatures of Yves Tanguy, Max Ernst, Sidney and Harriet Janis, Nicolas Calas, James Thrall Soby, Joseph Cornell, Man Ray, Mina Loy, Robert A. Parker, Julien Levy, Andre Breton, and others.
4to. pp. 54. Original publisher's cloth-backed boards, '56%' stamped in red to upper board (see below), original grey dust-jacket with orange interior. Illustrated throughout.
