The Marquis was Foreign Minister from November 1744 to January 1747, he was a master at studying people and events, and he knew Versailles from the inside. The Marquis was also good friends with Voltaire, and sympathized with the ideas and philosophy of those that supported the Age of Enlightenment. A writer and Bibliophile, the Marquis wrote a dim view of Louis XV and Pompadour, and he anticipated the crisis of 1748-1749, he also wrote of his support of Voltaire in his work: Considerations sur le gouvernement ancien et present de la France, published posthumously in 1764. This Journal, although abridged from the original tells of the rampant corruption, political and social, of the forty years that Louis VX reign. In his observations Versailles, the Government, and the state of France, he observed the decay first hand, it was understandable that he had prophesied the coming of the Revolution. Filled with anecdotes of politcal arguments, Court and King Louis XV private and political life, philosophers, and other influential people of that period. An excellent and personal look at the thoughts of an 'honest man,' watching the events that caused a crumbling Nation to completely collapse. Lengthy 37 page Introduction by C.A. Sainte-Beuve, with Notes by E.J.B. Rathery.
