Die Erstausgabe erschien 1898 und damit zehn Jahre vor Grahames erfolgreichstem Werk, dem großen englischen Kinderbuchklassiker "The Wind in the Willows (Der Wind in den Weiden)". Auch die 1897 geborene Illustratorin Marcia Lane Foster legt hier ein Frühwerk vor. Sie hat bis in die 1960er Jahre hauptsächlich Kinder- und Jugendbücher illustriert.

Both viewpoints depart significantly from the individual 'selfhood' that is normally taken for granted. Captives undergo a dehumanising transformation which ultimately crushes their sense of personal identity, while children enjoy an extraordinary variety of experiences which their developing individuality eventually represses. A number of different sources - memoirs, children's stories, academic studies - are used to reconstruct these alien subjectivities. Two sources, however, are accorded a privileged position. The first is the writing of Soeren Kierkegaard who provided the first convincing 'depth psychology' of the 'self to which confinement and childhood are opposed; and the second is literary works -particularly Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis and Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows - which illuminate directly the inner world of the confined and children. Confinement and childhood represent, in addition, the metaphysical polarities - the pure forms - from which are drawn contrasting images of human nature. The study concludes with a discussion of attempts, especially in the work of Proust, to create an artistic synthesis of these opposing images. -
