Dale, Gareth: Between State Capitalism and Globalisation. The Collapse of the East German Economy. Oxford, Bern, Berlin, Bruxelles, Frankfurt am Main, New York, Wien Peter Lang Vlg. 2004. ISBN: 978-3-03910-181-8
This book is an exploration of the economic history of the German Democratic Republic, with an emphasis upon its confrontation by and contribution towards economic and military competition on the world stage. Beginning with an analysis of the Soviet bloc as a state-capitalist formation, the GDR's economic history is charted, with detailed examinations of the challenges to Soviet-style autarky that were posed by the globalising world market, as well as of GDR policymakers' attempts to use Western imports and credits as a 'whip' to spur growth. The book's central section consists of an exploration of the ambivalent attitudes of East German policymakers and industrialists towards their West German counterparts in the 1980s, as the whip was transformed into an ever-tightening noose of debt. Here, a prodigious range of secondary sources as well as hitherto unpublished documents from the archives of the old regime are drawn upon to document the means by which relative economic decline and dependency upon Western institutions came to constrain the options available to the East German nomenklatura. Finally, this study analyses the political economy of the 1989 revolution and unification and of post-unification Eastern Germany.

McTaggart, M F. Hints on Horsemanship. Philadelphia: J B Lippincott 1932. ISBN: B002OWZRMI

Description: Includes a b&w frontis photo plate; illustrated with b&w drawings by D M Cafferata. Note: there is no printed date of copyright or publication. The original date of publication is 1919 (Heinemann, UK); the author's brief preface for this second edition states, ''This little book was written just 10 years ago'', which would imply a 1929 date, however that would have been for the U.K. edition. I date this from a laid in 1931-1932 J B Lippincott flyer, ''Book News from Sportland''. Quoted from the flyer: ''The author's aim in this book is to point out the common errors in horsemanship, explain the basic principles of good riding, train man and horse to ride better to hounds, instill a more sympathetic attitude toward horses, and reduce the abuse of whip and spur. In conversational style and easily comprehended, this is one of the most practical little books on riding that has appeared in a long time. Colonel McTaggart has won events all over the world and achieved notable successes in all branches of horsemanship. His book is, therefore, backed by real 'horse' sense and experience.'' BINDING/CONDITION: red cloth with black text and vignette; owner's name stamped in gilt on the front cover; foxing to the edges of the text block, the front board is bowed, otherwise Good condition; no dust jacket. 2nd Edition. Hardbound Small 8vo (about 7.75 inches tall) 162 pages.

Charles de Kunffy: Athletic Development of the Dressage Horse - Manege Patterns, Howell Book House 1992 1992 ; Schutzumschlag / dust cover ISBN: 0876058969

Hardback in Dust Wrapper (DJ). | Green Spine Strip with Cream boards with Gilt titling to the Spine. 9½" x 6 ". 192pp. Index. | [ Illustrated with black and white photographs & diagrams. From the cover: "The Athletic Development of the Dressage Horse is the first book devoted entirely to classical manege exercises that are ridden to supple, strengthen and, when necessary, correct. Internationally known instructor, coach and judge Charles de Kunffy details a program of exercises that will enable horses at all levels of dressage and combined training to improve their performance as equine athletes. Unlike other dressage books that explain how to exercise a horse in order to ride a standardized test, this book explains how such exercises can and should be used to increase performance ability, suspension, collection and changes of gaits through true patterns and counter patterns that are accompanied by diagrams and demonstration photographs. Those who have attended Charles de Kunffy's clinics know that horses inevitably and rapidly improve under his guidance and that riders themselves improve as well. And those encountering him for the first time will experience in this, his third dressage book, what others already know: Here is a horseman of uncommon intelligence and wit who expresses himself clearly, simply and elegantly." ] C O N D I T I O N : Very Good - in Very Good Dust Wrapper. Dust wrapper a little rubbed at the edges. Slight shelf-cock. Pp 111 appears to have been slightly misbound, a touch out of alignment but secure. Text complete, clean and tight.
