George,Gamow: The New World of Mr.Tompkins, Cambridge University Pr., ISBN: 0521639921
Mr Tompkins is back! The mild-mannered bank clerk with the short attention span and vivid imagination has inspired, charmed and informed young and old alike since the publication of the hugely successful Mr Tompkins in Paperback (by George Gamow) in 1965. He is now back in a new set of adventures exploring the extreme edges of the universe - the smallest, the largest, the fastest, the farthest. Through his experiences and his dreams, you are there at Mr Tompkins' shoulder watching and taking part in the merry dance of cosmic mysteries: Einstein's relativity, bizarre effects near light-speed, the birth and death of the universe, black holes, quarks, space warps and antimatter, the fuzzy world of the quantum, and that ultimate cosmic mystery of all ...love. This new text is revised, updated and expanded by best-selling popular-science author Russell Stannard (who wrote the much-acclaimed Uncle Albert series of books for children).

Jeremy,Bernstein: Secrets of the Old One Einstein, 1905, Springer-Verlag GmbH, Dezember 2005 ISBN: 0387260056
Beginning on the 18th of March, 1905,at approximately eight week intervals, the noted German physics journal Annalen der Physik received three hand-written manuscripts from a relatively unknown patent examiner in Bern. The patent examiner was the twenty-six year old Albert Einstein and the three papers would set the agenda for twentieth century physics. A fourth short paper was received by the journal on the 27th of September. It contained Einstein's derivation of the formula E=mc2. These papers with their many technological ramifications changed our lives in the twentieth century and beyond. While to a professional physicist the mathematics in these papers is quite straight forward, the ideas behind the mathematics are not. In fact, none of Einstein's contemporaries fully understood what he had done. The goal of this book is to make these ideas accessible to a general reader with no more mathematics than one learns in high school.PRAISE FOR BOOK:With wonderfully chosen digressions and some sophisticated physics plus the minimum amount of math to support it, Jeremy Bernstein has produced a charming account of Einstein's epoch-making papers of 1905. Here is surely the thinking person's guide to Einstein's 'Miracle Year.-Owen Gingerich, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Author, The Book Nobody Read: Chasing the Revolutions of Nicolaus CopernicusWhy are physicists celebrating the centenary of Einstein's miracle year In this gem of a book-and in simple words-Bernstein explains how young Albert, in that one year, set the foundation to a century of progress in physics.-Sheldon L. Glashow, Winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics, Professor, Boston University TOC:Introduction.- The Pre-history.- Einstein's Theory of Relativity.- Do Atom's Exist- The Quantam.- Epilogue.- Notes.<

Zhi-Kang,Xu;Xiao-Jun,Huang;Ling-Shu,Wan: Surface Engineering of Polymer Membranes, Springer-Verlag GmbH, Januar 2009 ISBN: 3540884122
Surface Engineering of Polymer Membranes covers the processes that modify membrane surfaces to improve their in-service performance, meaning, to confer surface properties which are different from the bulk properties. Purposes may be to minimize fouling, modulate hydrophilicity/ hydrophobicity, enhance biocompatibility, create diffusion barriers, provide functionalities, mimic biomembranes, fabricate nanostructures, etc. First, the basics of surface engineering of polymer membranes are covered. Then topics such as surface modification by graft polymerization and macromolecule immobilization, biomimetic surfaces, enzyme immobilization, molecular recognition, and nanostructured surfaces are discussed. This book provides a unique synthesis of the knowledge of the role of surface chemistry and physics in membrane science.Dr. Zhikang Xu of the Institute of Polymer Science of Zhejiang University has eight Chinese patents and in 2006 was honored as a Distinguished Young Scholar by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSFC). TOC:Introduction.- Functionalization methods for the membrane surfaces.- Characterization of structure and properties for the membrane surfaces.- Surface modification by Graft polymerization.- Surface modification by macromolecule immobilization.- Membranes with phospholipid analogous surfaces.- Membranes with glycosylated surfaces.- Membranes with biocatalytic surfaces.- Molecular imprinting on the membrane surface.- Nanofibrous membrane with functionalized surface.<
